The Waltons is an American television series created by Earl Hamner, Jr. based on the book Spencer's Mountain. The series' pilot was known as The Homecoming, a 1973 American drama film.
Setting & Time Period[]
The series initially takes place on Walton's Mountain, Virginia during the time of the Great Depression. Families struggled day to day due to the price increase of consumer goods and decrease of work available. The story follows the lives of The Waltons, a multi-generational household whose ancestors cultivated the spot where they live (hence "Waltons Mountain"). Throughout the series, the characters become older and eventually start raising families of their own, working out of the house, or joining the military ranks.
